Repairs on Angkor Wat causeway’s south bank start

Apsara Authority officials have started repairing the embankment in the south of Angkor Wat’s causeway, retaining its original form after repairing the north and west embankment.

Apsara Authority said yesterday that it has started restoring the 25-metre long embankment which is in a state of disrepair and collapse.

Regarding this issue, Apsara spokesman Long Kosal said yesterday that the repair of the south embankment is the third step of total renovation efforts at the causeway, the first and second phases being in the north and west.

Sim Dany, the technical officer of the project, said that this third phase will focus on strengthening the foundation and high-risk areas of the embankment.

She explained that the team is removing the damaged stones to another location to easily repair and strengthen the foundation before rearranging the stones in their original position.

She added that the condition of the embankment is deteriorating due to the quality of the concrete used in repairs by the French in 1962, and this needs to be removed and replaced with traditional mortar.

The second phase of the project to repair the western embankment of Angkor Wat, with a total length of 60 metres, was completed in July, while the first phase in the northern part with a length of 80 metres was completed in 2020.
